The diagnostic scales operate on the principle of Bioelectric Resistance Analysis, during which a completely safe mini current determines proportions of body tissues. Bioelectric Resistance Analysis is frequently referred to as Bioelectric Impedance Analysis - BIA.

Muscle tissues and water have good electrical conductivity and offer a low resistance to the passing current. Fatty tissues hardly conduct electric current and therefore have very low conductivity and present a very high resistance.

Diagnostic scales perform the measurements quickly in seconds. To monitor your weight and other body composition parameters correctly, you should endeavour to weigh yourself at the same time of day (i.e. in the morning) and observing same conditions (i.e. before breakfast and without clothes).

Short term fluctuations (i.e. over few days only) are usually only due to fluid / water losses. Basic weight rule says that the short term weight changes almost exclusively represent changes in body water content, while mid and long term weight changes suggest changes in the percentages of body fat and muscle.
