TENS Therapy Background
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) has been designed to stimulate sensory nerve endings in order to decrease perception of pain. The mild electrical stimuli block pain signals from travelling up the nerves via spinal cord to the central nervous system. This is called the 'pain gate control'. In addition to blocking the pain signals from reaching the brain, the TENS stimuli also encourage the production of body's own natural pain killers called 'endorphins'. Endorphins change sensory perception of pain and induce the feeling of well being.
Please note that TENS therapy does not cure pain or medical conditions. TENS merely helps to control the perception of pain and makes you feel more comfortable.
TENS therapy, such as delivered by the Pain Doctor and other brands of TENS machines, is effective in many acute and chronic painful problems, such as arthritis, neck pain, neuralgia, sciatica, lumbago, whiplash, back pain, osteoporotic pain, sprains and strains and sports injuries, period pain, post operative pain and pain caused by many other acute or chronic conditions.
